It’s safe to say, I now have a beetroot obsession. I remember as a kid, my mum asking (forcing) me to try some and within seconds, I was spitting it back up into the bin, like a small llama. I hated the stuff with a passion! But after battling against injury over the last few months, I’ve made a conscious effort to try and include foods, that will not only improve performance but generally, improve my health and well-being. This injury, has unfortunately failed to heal properly and so it has given me a bit of a wake up call and opened my eyes to try and make some changes. Diet is hugely important as an athlete but previously, I have just fuelled my body with anything and everything that I wish – relying on the fact I was young and unbreakable! However, things change and the body needs a bit more help sometimes. As an athlete, trying to become a professional one – everything should be taken a little more seriously and in more depth.
These beetroot brownies had me very dubious as I have a BIG sweet tooth. But studies have shown that refined sugar actually robs bones of calcium and is detrimental to bone health, with this in mind, I’ve tried to make the gradual shift of reducing my refined sugar intake for some more natural ingredients! I would never revert fully as everything needs to be taken in moderation but it’s definitely a start in the right direction.
